Showing the boat to a prospective buyer today, I noticed a dry, silvery substance in the fwd bilge, right around the bilge pump. It feels like sand but there really isn't a way for sand to intrude at the point I noticed it, about 6 ft aft of the bow, about adjacent to the head. My suspicion is that it's a benign drying of the aluminum kind of hull paint used by Marinette as a sound barrier. It's in a really dry area of the hull (unlike the main bilge).

Anyone see the same stuff in their boat or have a clue?

I was able to vacuum it easily. Doesn't look like corrosion or effloresence of the aluminum itself.

Had the same thing a few years ago Joel. Up in the bow it's dry and the sound proofing is painted with a silver substance. Most of mine has come off over the years and with a little help from me . If i had a buyer comming to look, would take a small wet vac and get what i could out.

If you have carpet installed in that area and no padding underneath the carpet, it could be the backing coming off as it "rubs" against the plywood floors. When I bought my BigM , the dude even commented that he didn't know how sand got in the bilge area but after a closer look it was the carpet backing coming apart.

Even the carpet edges will flake off and fall into the bilge area. It looks just like sand.....

This isn't carpet dust which I know about from home where backing dries out and crumbles into small particles. What I do suspect is happening is the "aluminum" faced soundproofing paint the mfr used throughout the hull is drying out because it is flaking in the fwd bilge area. It looks ominous but appears to be benign.

I noticed this much earlier in the life of the boat and I would bet if you all looked up front you would find a similar occurrence.
