Changed out stbd eng impeller a few months ago....looked ok so I wasn't in a hurry to change port Brick wall because it is a nightmare to get to....stalled a little too long and didn't quite make it to winter Not talking .

Port impeller disintegrated this past weekend.

Noticed muffler on the engine sounded louder the last couple of times out. Cranked engine and noticed a lot of steam/smoke coming from muffler. Engine climbed to 160* and climbing...shut it down. Pulled raw water pump. Pulled exhaust side water hose off salad/filter bowl, back flushed transmission cooler...pieces did come out even though the cooler is on the intake side of the pump.

Not sure if pieces went into the exhaust logs or not...I'm sure they did d'oh! ...but I'm not pulling logs unless I find hot spots with my nifty infrared temp gun (thanks Jeff)

Moral of this story...if the engine gets throaty with a little steam coming out..check water flow and change impeller if you haven't in a few years. Think

Anyone have more advice?

Was down at Driftaway this last weekend and started engines for first time this year. Heard a noise and checked it out. Looks like the bearings on the pump with the impeller are giving out. Question is, can these be rebuilt and by whom. Or where can i find another one? Looking for any help. Mike on ohio. 76 Sedan with 360 Chryslers.

Here’s another tip that might aide as in your case of a exploding impeller I’d check the exhaust hoses aft of the engines for interior collapse most of the exhaust hoses have been there since the BigM was built. Here’s a short synopsis of how I know of this well I blew a impeller ok changed it out cranked up engine headed out never got a 1/4 mile out gage pegged out shut eng.. down came back to port. Sure enough impeller blown apart. Thinking to myself U dumb A$$ U put the impeller in backwards $40 down the drain. Another $40 later making sure everything installed correctly + two days of prime time fishing lost, off I go BAM samo samo as above. So now I hire the best mechanic in Bay Port MI. a 80 year young gentle man FRED tears into it tells me U had the impeller in correctly puts it all together start up eng. ok that’ll B $300 not so fast Freddy lets take it for a sea trial gage pegs out again OH $hit. Come back to port pour Fred a glass of wine & have me a Brewski sitting there contemplating what’s wrong all of a sudden the old boy ask my wife for a old towel & her shower cap I’m thinking man I shouldn’t have gave him that wine he can’t hold his liquor now he’s stuffing the towel up the outer exhaust tube than puts the shower cap over it ? Fred tells me start taking the exhaust off from the eng. back. Inside the long hose sure as $hit there’s a huge glob of the interior hose plugging the hose. Back pressure was blowing the impellers. Replaced with S.S. tubing now U wantta hear a throaty 318 almost sound like a go
fast didn’t impress my dock neighbors much at 5 am when I crank them puppy’s up. Moral of the story check them hose once in a while especially if your eng. has over heated a time
or two. Or just because most are 25/ 30 or in some cases over 40 years old. And now for the rest of the story (per Paul Harvy) Naw I won’t bore U guys any longer. Anxious

BTW Fred is now in his 90's does consulting @ $50 hr.U do the work but if U have problem that's hard to solve he's worth every penny Applause

Norm,
"Replaced with SS tubing" What are you talking about???? Did you replace all of he rubber exhaust hoses??

I can reach my hand through the stern exhaust hole and feel that one of the rubber hoses has a bubble of caved in wall. Don't think it is causing a problem.
