I've looked but cannot find a place that will tell me what is in the coil units. Are they coils -or transformers? I think I read that they are really transformers(with CDI)? Is the CDI circuitry within the coil/xfrm pkg? Is there a separate coil on the stator for all three coil/xfmr. ckts? Haven't found a schematic so far. It's a 75HP Force - '94/96 I think.Brick wall

Force (formerly Chrysler OBs) used both old Chrysler and newer (after they bought them) Merc parts. The "coil" is just that, though it receives a hell of a jolt from the capacitors in the spark box--several hundred volts.

The way things work is this: The stator simply creates the juice. The trigger coil tells the spark box when and where to fire the coils, and the capacitors discharge into them--pow!

Parts are hard to find for these motors, but I'll bet you could use a Merc coil (though it would require a bit of fabricating). I have a bunch of them if you want to try one. PM me with your address.

Thanks, Jeff. That is how I read that they work. Unhooked the regulator and had fire on all three. Cancelled order for stator and ordered regulator. Still would like to learn whats in the CDM(coil pkg). There are diode checks for them - so must be some(one?) in there.

What tells the trigger ckt when to fire the CDM. Can anyone point to written text for the theory surrounding this? I think I read that it's the magnets on the inside of the stator ring.

Magnets in the rotating flywheel. How does the spark box know WHICH is # one cylinder (to initiate the sequence)? Dammed if I know, but I assume that an extra magnet spaced differently than the rest tell it which is which.

I'm slowly learning, Jeff. is both the cd voltage AND the battery charging voltage handled by the same rectifier/regulator? Do Schematic diagrams exist- or just text and wiring diagrams?

Evidently I am the only one in boatdom that wonders about these things. I'm still searching for the answer about what voltages the rectifier/regulator handles.
