Well, I was "a-gain" this, but the "Admiral" was right all along. She insisted that we buy a cheap carpet ($39 at Ollies; "Good stuff, cheap!" We must be related.) And this is an ordinary old carpet remnant, light tan in color. We laid her down (the CARPET!) and walked all over her all summer, and the result is: We LOVE it! Had no problems with wet rug-itis, no curling up of the outer edges, and no fraying. It's really nice to walk on and--if needed (for going inside the cockpit hatch--I can simply roll it up.

So here's yet another cockpit flooring idea to add to the list.

Jeff..and anyone else with cabin carpet...

When we replaced the original carpet, we slit the new one on three sides exactly following the lines of the hatch (no slit on rear side of the hatch , where it hinges) and bound the edges. Depending on the type of carpet material, you may not have to bind edges. Commercial grade carpet tiles, for example, don't need it. Were we to do it over, I would use the tiles which can be glued down easily by the Captain and mates and friends..no professional install required.

With this approach it is never necesssary to fold the rug during one's (frequent) trips into the scary depths of the bilge. Also slit was the second folding panel that give access to the port engine. We've had this carpet for about 10 years or more and the binding is just starting to come a little loose. You can have it done professionally, of course, or buy some binding and iron it into place with some thread to reinforce the join.

I am putting down a thick rubber athletic pad over the hatch and seams in the cockpit deck. I am not putting the stainless steel frame around the hatch cover because I cut my arm on that meat slicer and had to go to the hospital. The rubber rug will do a better job of keeping the water out anyway. For the interior salon deck I am going to keep it simple. Tan Porch paint that matches a color in the curtains and a fancy rich looking and thick persian throw rug over the open floor area and hatch covers.
