After decades of winterizing water systems in RVs and boats, I stumbled onto something purely by accident this Fall. To wit:

Had the sink faucets wide open to empty the fresh water tank. Due to a mis-communication with the "Admiral" (I'm being nice here) the tank was NOT empty as I thought when I poured in a gallon of Pink Stuff. The water then ran and ran and ran without a hint of pink color appearing (prompting me to curse the fact that I wasted a gallon of Pink Stuff. I'm, ah, a bit thrifty, you see.) Well, many minutes later I was stunned to see the clear water suddenly turn pink! Apparently, the Pink Stuff does not readily mix with water and, being less dense, floats on top. Only when the tank was near empty did it finally appear.

To me, that was a revelation, and an explanation for hot water heater stink in the Spring, along with foaming cold water for weeks at a time. The Pink Stuff remaining in the fresh water tank does not readily mix with the incoming water. It stays in there for weeks and several fresh water additions before it's finally flushed out.

From now on, I'll pump every bit of that Pink crap out--then flush the system with a gallon of fresh water, several times over--before filling the tank.

We live and learn...

Jeff

Thanks, Jeff, if your one gallon at a time Spring flush-out works, it will make all of our lives, and noses, much happier.

Jeff, this may help you, what I did was disconect the freshwater at the tank and allow to drain while I blow lines clear with low pressure compressed air. After water slows to a dribble coming out of the fresh water supply, I put the pink stuff in until I see pink running out (about two gallons in my 40 gallon tank) and then replace the line and leave it this way till spring. Then in the spring, I take it to my local marina (I have well water, not city) and disconect the water again and flush with a gallon or so at a time and let drain, repeat several times, this get most of the pink stuff out. Place the water line back on the tank and run it all for a minute or two and the add about a cup of bleach to stop bacterial growth within the tank. My son brushed his teeth with it before I could warn him about on-board water supply hazards, and he said the water tasted fine. Since he did not end up on the ground convulsing after the episode, I have to assume the water was good to go. Jack.

I take it that everybody just about does it the same.
Norm, i'm like you, always some antifreeze in the liquor cabinet and brewskies in the frig all winter long. Never know when a person might need it; just to get rid of them gray skies when visiting the old girl.

I got some more pink stuff revelations. It says on my jug of pink stuff not to use it to winterize engines so I don't. The color of my non-poisoness anti-freeze is blue. I get it at a local marine store. I use the pink stuff in the sink traps, toilet and holding tanks. I only do this because the gubmint demands alcohol be poisoned. I rigged bypass valves on the water heater which I just drain dry. I winterize the boat much the same way we winterize the hunting cabin. You don't put pink stuff in the hot water tank. It is too hard to flush out.

Yoop:
It doesn't say not to winterize engines with the pink stuff, it says not to use as antifreeze in an engine (in lieu of auto antifreeze).

Based on what I've read and a bit of experimenting..
- Could one not check with a 1/2 glass of water and pour some pink stuff in it to see if the 2 don't intermix?
- As for water tanks and hot water heaters...
.. the pink stuff is added solely so that water remaining in the tanks doesn't freeze and crack the tanks/lines?
--> couldn't the outlet ports on the tanks be opened, the faucets be opened to allow free air flow out of the tank (collecting it, or pumping it out). Once that water empties, place a shop vac hose over the outlet port, duct tape it to prevent any major leaks and essentially suck it dry. After 10 minutes, I doubt there'd be any water of consequence remaining, either in the tank or lines. Without any water in the tanks/lines, there'd be no need to "pinkerize" them. Closing the system up would make them a closed system and the only water would be present would be what condenses from the trapped air - hardly enough to make a good frost on the insides of the tank and no where near what would be a cracking hazard.

Me too brent; have never put anything in my fresh water tank . Drain and let go for the winter. Pump the pink stuff from the jug to the lines and water heater and add some in the head. Don't know if everyone has a stainless water tank but what little is left there will not expand enough to bust. Flush the hot water tank really good in the spring to get it right, the water is free.

The easy solution 4 us guys in the frozen tundra is Heated inside Storage at first it sounds expensive Think But when one sits down & figures out the cost of winterizing a twin BigM like the shrink wrap the fluids it takes one breaks out just about even. All I use to do was Sta-Bil the fuel put some 8oz. of fresh water solution in the F/W holding tank & tape the lid shut in the head than empty the fridge perishables & I was finished winterizingDancing Now the plus side one has 6 months 2 ready the ole Girl 4 the Spring time launch. One has about 24 weekends 2 accomplish this.Anxious Another plus is the partying weekends to ease the winter blahs Dancing Dancing Dancing So C U guys down in the warmer climates really don’t have all that much 2 Crow about. Whistle
