After decades of winterizing water systems in RVs and boats, I stumbled onto something purely by accident this Fall. To wit:
Had the sink faucets wide open to empty the fresh water tank. Due to a mis-communication with the "Admiral" (I'm being nice here) the tank was NOT empty as I thought when I poured in a gallon of Pink Stuff. The water then ran and ran and ran without a hint of pink color appearing (prompting me to curse the fact that I wasted a gallon of Pink Stuff. I'm, ah, a bit thrifty, you see.) Well, many minutes later I was stunned to see the clear water suddenly turn pink! Apparently, the Pink Stuff does not readily mix with water and, being less dense, floats on top. Only when the tank was near empty did it finally appear.
To me, that was a revelation, and an explanation for hot water heater stink in the Spring, along with foaming cold water for weeks at a time. The Pink Stuff remaining in the fresh water tank does not readily mix with the incoming water. It stays in there for weeks and several fresh water additions before it's finally flushed out.
From now on, I'll pump every bit of that Pink crap out--then flush the system with a gallon of fresh water, several times over--before filling the tank.
We live and learn...
