Noticed some steam coming out of the port engine on my last three outings....

Observations are the port temp gage goes up and down, from 160 to 180. When the temp starts to drop, that's when the steam is coming out the exhaust. When the temp goes back up to 180, no steam.

Changed out the impeller to no avail, however the old impeller was about shot (no lost fins though, cracked pretty bad though).

Replaced the thermostat, was a 140, new one is a 180.

The engine is flowing water really good.

Used an infrared thermometer on several points of the engine, three points on each exhaust manifold, thermostat housing, and on the risers. The hottest temp I saw was about 112 running at various rpm's, 2500 and 4000, and at idle.

Starboard engine does not steam at all. New raw water pump, new thermostat on starboard...

I'm guessing I need to replace head gaskets on port engine???

Thoughts? Are the head gaskets and intake standard gaskets for a 318?

I've read several posts regarding same subject.

Saw Capt. Brent's recent post and video referencing steam.

Any and all prior experience and information is greatly appreciated.

Not ready to winterize yet....still staying anywhere from 40 - 70 degrees on Tellico Lake and loving it....

Happy boating

That 180 is way too hot; 140 for RWC and 160 for FWC is normal. Something is strangling the cooling system somewhere and spiking the temperature, possibly my old adversary; an air leak before the raw water pump.

For some reason my port engine also steams more than the other, and they run the same temperatures (about 150--RWC). Your measured temperatures also seem a bit LOW to me, assuming you took the temperatures at the right spot: the body of the temp sensor is best for engine temps.

It does sound like a head gasket to me. I would do a spark plug check.

A leakdown test would tell a lot and might save a lot of unnecessary work.

feel the elbows and the risers when underway. if their to hot to keep your hand on them then they need to be taken off the manifolds and cleaned of large flakes of rust.
