Got another electronics question: I'm looking for a GOOD, SIMPLE video editing program. I have an .AVI file on my camcorder that I want to make into a .mpg file and edit out the junk. The Windows Movie Maker and my good old Pinnacle program doesn't recognize the .AVI file (though it uploads fine on Photobucket. Go figure?)

Any suggestions for what I need?

Thanks,

Jeff

PS: I've used the One CLick You Tube music download program to download a HUNDRED HOURS of music. Thanks a zillion to who put me on to it.

Try this first before you spend (ugh) money and if it doesn't work, read on: Using a free downloadable video file conversion program, convert the file to something Movie Maker is comfortable with. You can experiment with a short video clip of say, one minute duration. WMM should handle mpeg or mpeg2 pretty easily.

If that fails: highly recommended are Premier Elements 10, about $79. Shop around for it. There are occasional sales that sometimes get it down to or below the 50 buck level. I intend to buy this program soon to edit about 30 clips I have waiting to be downloaded from the camera and then uploaded to YouTube.

Also recommended is a program called Vegas, reportedly a bit cheaper but I haven't priced it. Both are supposed to be relatively easy -- usually that is a warning of "learning curve ahead". But it's digital video and there is nothing simple or easy in this realm if you want to do acceptable work.

Good luck:-)

..."Using a free downloadable video file conversion program, convert the file to something Movie Maker is comfortable with. "

Great, but what would this magic program be? If successful, I could perhaps then edit it with my Pinnacle program, that I both like and understand.

Thanks!

Jeff,

There are a couple different types of AVI formats.
The Pinnacle help forum is riddled with people experiancing the same problem.
See the link below to another video forum on how to manipulate the format using DVdate program. It will recompress between AVI1 and AVI2.

Wah ha ha ha...
you've stumbled into the dark world of codex's.
Be prepared for more failure than you have ever expirenced before.

Pinnacle may work just fine with AVI's IF you had the correct compression/ decompression (codex) driver.
Earlier MS media players had a fair selection until the upgrade to a new version came along. Then I discovered challenges with files that worked fine before. Try finding some codex packs. Sometimes a DVD publishing software like Nero, RealPlayer, and the like will include them.

I've had the best luck with K-Lite codec pack (Full version).

Jeff: looks like we have a bunch of savvy videophiles here. I volunteer occasionally at a place that rehabs computers for needy folks and we have been putting the free K-lite pack on the machines so it must have some useful video codecs. As for free converter programs, I will see if I still had the list a friend sent me and will pass it along. . . You can easily google for them but as usual there are cautions about what accepts from the web.

Video formats has been evolving too quickly for my pea brain to keep up with. In my head, I still splice film.

First of all, thanks to all of you for your assistance!

Believe it or not, I dug up one of those coffee cans in the backyard (frozen ground and all) and bought (gasp!) the latest, Windows 7 compatible, version of Pinnacle's Studio video editor (one I understand how to use). My old version wouldn't run right on W 7.

On converting video .AVI files, the Hamster program works great! It was the only one that worked, so it's my main weapon from now on (assuming I still need it with the Studio program).

Again, thanks to all. We have a great resource here!
