Can anyone tell how the engine warning system is supposed to work? The manual is not much help. What sensors? How do I troubleshoot the system? Any help is appreciated.Thanks.

The system has temperature switches (NOT sensors that run the gage) and an oil pressure switch (also NOT a sensor; think idiot light switch). When all is well, there's enough oil pressure to open the contacts of the oil pressure switch, and not enough temperature to close the contacts on the temperature switches. That's why, at start up, the alarm goes off--no oil pressure.
Hope that helps.
Jeff
PS: I added a third temp switch on each engine--in the other exhaust elbow. Also, since I have twin engines, I separated the engine alarm with a relay. This allows me to run on one engine without the alarm going off for the other engine (due to no oil pressure). have details on how this is done for anyone who is interested.

I guess it has been settled that it's OK to run on one engine to save fuel. So Jeff's system to separate the alarms would seem to be essential to keep an alarm on the running engine and turn it off on the other. We need a diagram. My 32' is stock. I can use it a a guide to repair the wiring harness on my 28'. The engine harness plug and alarm wiring got cut out when the engine was replaced.

The relay required is a common unit available cheaply (of course!) on eBay; think I paid about 5 bucks each for them. The relay is set up so the oil pressure signal goes to normally open contacts, interrupting it. With the ignition ON, the contacts close and the alarm goes off (until oil pressure comes up). Pretty basic. The color code shown is fairly common. Jeff fastjeff_2 attached the following image(s):
