I've been otherwise consumed during hunting season and didn't notice this waterway event. Apparently, a 43' Defeaver was swamped by a towboat in a tight narrow S-bend on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway (MM317 + -). Not an M but a very seaworthy trawler. Lots of theorys on the swamping but, as a long-time TennTom cruiser, it caused me to do some serious considerations of my tow passing protocol. It could have implications for some of you other waterway cruisers, wherever you might chose to venture.

Thanks Jim, Nice article on barge and tug traffic. Don't see too much here on Watts Bar but respect them when we pass.

We coastal boaters don't run into that problem, though we DO see lots of tugs pulling/ pushiong barges on the C & D canal where I boat. I give them a wide berth!

Mr Jeff is wise (as usual) to give the towboats and their barges lots of room. ABout 20 yrs ago on the Chesapeake Bay, a couple of young men drove their boat between tow and barge. What they failed to realize was that there is a cable between the two. It had gone slack and just as the boat crossed, the cable snapped up and literally took the head off of one of the poor kids. Be careful around the big boys.
