Have a 1988 32 with the 275 Crusaders. Our starboard engine will not idle in gear unless it is 200-300 rpm's faster than the port. Anything less and get the transmission thumping. When both engines are off and in neutral, the port prop tunrs quite easily by hand. The starboard engine is way tighter. Could this be the prop bearing where the packing is or could it be the coupler underneath the boat?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Could have a rope around the prop shaft.

Could also be bent shaft, bent strut for prop shaft, engine out of alignment, or ovetight packing nut.

Inspect outside of shaft, if possible, then disconect (four bolts) and turn shaft manually, should turn free, if not shaft issues. If it turns freely, check tranny/motor for issues. J. M.

Thanks much- to confirm, if I disconnect shaft from transmission (assuming that is the four bolt comment, i should be able isolate the shaft for a simple test.

If it appears it is the shaft, are there businesses that straighten or re-true the shaft? If so, any good ones in Michigan? Or is there a best one to ship a shaft to?

Thanks again for the inputs!

Regards,

Gregg

I seconds Bill's choice I've also had good luck using them & then if U live down river there's the PROP GUY also does Gre8 work but a little more pricey U can goole the Prop Guy 4 PH # & location. He uses the latest Tech with lasers & the like they can fine tune your Props for what ever U want them to do with in reason. They got my BigM to troll @ 1mph @ the reccomend 600rpm & it only cost top end speed 2/3 mph Dancing

Prop guy's business is called 'Wolverine propellor' and is located in Lincoln Park (@ Dix & Southfield roads), MI. I did some electrical work for him last year, honest and a hard worker. Straightened my starboard and is currently doing the same for my port shaft, take the yolk with you, too, he'll check the mating surfaces for trueness. Cost: about a 100 bucks. He's in the phone book, and his real name is Ron Jacobs.

Loosen up the packing nut a bit to make sure it is wet to lubricate the packing some. You still have a hundred pounds of stainless steel shaft, the steel coupling, the packing that is tight to the shaft and a heavy bronze propeller to get moving, so do not expect it to spin like a top. This is like spinning a bag of cement. Be careful of the nylon spacers on the coupling bolts that isolate the stainless steel shaft and bronze propeller from the aluminum hull. The rubber/fibre cutlass bearings should be all right but they could disintegrate.
