I have been going through my exhaust system pulling maintance. I was trying to prepare them for paint and was lightly probing the elbows with my chipping hammer. the elbow was so thin that the hammer went through the wall. So have unbolted all the elbows and end plates remove all plugs . There is a ton of rust in the manifolds. How would you guys get that rust out? Is everybody in agreement that it will be OK to remove those copper tubes. thank you, all opinions are valued.

Pull apart each piece and take it to a place that has the 3 unit bake, blast and shake system for engine blocks. the manifolds and the elbows should be ok and when you get them back they should look like brand new castings. the problem you will run into is the casting plugs on the goose necks. if they have brass plugs then your ok to remove BUT if their the steel plugs 9 out of 10 time your going to have problems removing them and the goose neck castings will crack.

Gonzo I have not been on in a couple of days that why I didn't respond. Thanks to alot of help from members with great search ideas and great used parts I have replace my existing manifolds with like new center rise maniflods. Now on those cast steel plugs I did attemp to remove them using a torch and took them up to orange colored heat . they would not come lose, so I took a punch and drove it through the plug then took the torch and melted the cast plug out towards the threaded wall in 3 places next I took a chesel and knocked the plug pieces in to the center and shooked out the pieces. I have done some things like this on large nuts that were frozen by cutting down to the threads in 2 places and seperating the nut with a chesel and a BFH . I realize not everybody has a torch but we all have friends.

It's ashame they don't soak the riser and logs in a solution of hydrazine when new to remove the O2 from the carbon. Would probably never rust.
