Help! Since I purchased DriftAway in Nov, It has constantly taken on water here on the Ohio. I checked all of the thru hulls and the packings and found them to be good. I finally found the drain hole plug in the front and found that it was not tight. Is there another one somewhere else? I am still taking on water but not as bad.

Not sure what model DriftAway is, but my '75 32' only has one drain plug, forward below the sole. Mine was iron (!) and I replaced it with a 316 stainless pipe plug from McMaster.com. It was either 1/4" or 3/8", I don't remember.

You might want to check your rudder stocks for leaks, as well as the shaft stuffing boxes (which should leak a little). I also take on a fair amount of fresh rainwater through leaks from the decks and cockpit, still hunting them down.

Mike,

The aft drain at least on my 32 sedan model is under the cockpit hatch decking about where the
mufflers start, The aft bilge pump is in the engine compartment between the engines on the
starboard side it’s easy to find just look for the discharge hose going out the bulkhead & follow it
back , plus the forward one which U have already found. Anxious Lucky U being able to be boating
already the marina’s up here don’t open till the 15th of this month. One doesn’t really want to be
there till they are open at least a week or so till they work the bugs outta their systems Boo hoo!

You may want to clean the plug threads and put some teflon tape on them.

Depending on what year you boat is you will have 1 or more plugs as others have mentioned.

Unless a previous owner covered the plugs they should all be accessible via hatch/engine room etc.

On a 1970 express there is only one plug and it is under the v birth. Mine is on land and took on RAIN WATER the yard set it ass end low and the gutters dump into the cockpit. One lets water out onto the trim that goes over the edge of the inside and outside, witch followes a path down the inside pannel onto the floor and into the bulge.

If you do not have the back covered I bet you get a lot of rain water in the hatch..
Where do you dock on the Ohio? I am at RIVERSIDE

Speaking of drain plugs, I learned the hard way to never leave the boat on a trailer with the batteries turned off and the hull plug in.

I was gone a week last summer and had the boat on the trailer in front of my house. When I came back and wanted to put the boat in the water, I backed my truck up to it to hook it up. Could barely lift the tongue with the jack, and when I got it on my truck I could barely move it. Went down in the cabin and pulled up the floor hatch where the hull plug is located &found that the bilge was full of water and was just starting to touch the bottom of the floor sheeting. After talking to my employees and learning of the record setting rain that we received while I was gone, it all made sense. From now on, the plug comes out when the boat comes out of the water.

..." From now on, the plug comes out when the boat comes out of the water. "

Just remember to...you know! I left the plug out of my dfink boat only three times last year! Gettng better.

Jeff

PS: ALL boats should be stored bow hign and have a stern drain plug. Doing itthe other way around is looking for trouble.

That reminds me:

I got a job at a marina when I was twenty. After working there for two months, they sent me to deliver a new boat to lake of the ozarks. The hull plug was in the truck with me, and I was told repeatedly by my boss to make sure I put the plug in before I launch the boat.

Well, after driving for ten hours through a severe thunderstorm and getting to the marina I was to leave the boat at, I forgot the plug. I had never operated a boat this big before (it was only a 28 footer) and I was by myself. Getting it off the trailer and tied up at the launch ramp dock was very interesting. It was even more interesting when I realized the plug wasn`t in and I had to put the boat back on the trailer so I could put the plug in. Of course, it was a rainy friday in the spring so there was nobody at the marina to help.

After much screwing around and many choice words, I got the job done. After this, I don`t think I will ever forget a hull plug again!

At least on my BigM the plug is installed from the inside of the boat. As long as I notice it is missing right away!

I've removed the forward plug while in the water. Kind of unnerving to see that fountain of water shooting up.

inspection I’ll be sure to see them S.S. puppies Whistle if I’ve over looked them. d'oh!

I like the ignition key idea - it's sort of like the long red streamers with the message "remove before flight" that are attached to pitot covers and such that need to come off before going anywhere.

But, I believe that I have the one drain plug, in the bow. Is there another one aft that I don't know about? I have a '75 32' and have only seen the one plug. The bow plug is at the lowest point when the boat is blocked level. Anybody know?

Doug,

I have two the one in the bow & there's another one aft about where the muffler start under the decking. Think been going to put one in the very stern like Sickleave, & Jeff, have done just haven't gotten around to it to many pokers in the fire Brick wall

To be honest, I have never found the forward drain plug in mine! Oh, I know it's there from the outside, but I never found it INside--and now that the waste tank is in tat area, I never will.

Jeff,

I don't know if they were factory, but both of my Marinettes came with iron drain plugs. You might want to test yours with a magnet (from outside) to see if it's magnetic. If so, it might be worth moving that tank.....

Oooooohhhh! So that's where it is. The aft one is stainless, so I hope this one is too.

Thanks,

Jeff

I learned my lesson on drain plugs many years ago. Last years big oops was forgetting the air conditioner pump strainer. A heck of a lot of water can come in from that sucker and quick let me tell you. I have a pre launch checklist now....
