I"ve been reading through the posts concerning bottom painting and still have some questions.

It appears that the proper way to do this is to bring the hull down to bare metal throught the use of a sand blaster. This is not an option for me this year due to the cost involved, but I need to do something with the bottom.

I had a commercial pressure washing company come over and blast all of the loose paint off the bottom using water. What I am left with primarily is the red bottom paint that appears to be factory, with some kind of yellow looking primer under it. There are some areas that showed bare metal at some time in the past, and over these areas is a white paint of some kind that is very hard and difficult to remove ( maybe some kind of primer). The blue trilux taht was put on the bottom by the previous owner has nearly all washed off with the pressure washer. I have purchased red trilux paint for the bottom, but am wondering what steps I should take before I apply it.

I have some areas of bare metal. Should I treat the whole bottom as if it were bare and just follow the interlux instructions found in another post, or should I just treat the bare spots with these steps and then paint the entire bottom?

I guess what I am asking is if I should use vinyl lux prime wash on the entire hull, or just on the bare spots. After that, should I use interprotect 2000E on the entire hull, even over the remaining trilux paint, or just do the areas that were bare and treated with the prime wash?

I'm in a very similar situation. I sanded down the area's that were bad to bare metal with 60-80 grit. Worked about 20-30 minutes and then came back with zinc chromate spray primer. Too bad this wasn't enough because the bottom of the boat looked like a giant umbrella rig of chartrues and green. Once I finished the entire boat I put two coats of primocon underwater primer / barrier coat on. Should be 5 coats but time/money etc. I am using alumacoat this year. It has no copper in it. I found out that the trilux requires a sound barrier coat to be applied over aluminum. Not really aluminum friendly. The marina will spray the alumacoat on. They said it works pretty well. They are on bear creek which is notorious for barnacles. We'll see.

The marina had recommended taking the boat to Smith's ship yard to be blasted (marina can't/won't do it) and then run it back in the water to the marina. They then power wash, etch, prime, barrier coats, paint. Smith's ship yard didn't have time this spring.

That yellow paint you see is a zinc chromate primer. Probably original. Don't bother applying the vinylux on the painted areas. Only use it in one thin coat on the bare aluminum areas after you have sanded them or etched them. Then cover the vinylux spots with a coat of primer. If you are going to blast it all off next year, use one thin coat of vinylux (or equivalent) then 4-5 coats of two part epoxy paint.
With that base, your hull will last forever.
