The auto paint guys are putting the stripes on the freshly painted flybridge. I had them use the Schilling rubber enamel. It's a 1 part system using an etching primer. They did a great job but they would have preferred to use paint they were used to like IMRON. I scuffed the surface for them with 120. I figured the Schilling etching primer would fill the pinholes and spider web cracks. They took 80 grit and sanded off all of that down to bare metal or original primer. They did not like the etching primer. It was harder than they are used to. But they sanded the whole primed FB with 320 grit! They then had to shoot 2 lite topcoats so it wouldn't run followed by 2 heavier top coats. They went above and beyond what I would have done with beautiful results.
The idea behind the Schilling enamel is that it will bond to the original Marinette topcoat. You have to use the etching primer on bare spots and feather them in. You use 120 or 150 to scuff the original paint. When I do the decks I will take the 80 grit to the badly degraded areas and prime more than just the bare metal, but, no way am I going to sand a whole boat with 320 and put on four topcoats. It's a dang boat not a Volvo. BTW I had Schilling do a color match to the original light cream color which faded to dead white. Wow.. it is nice.
