I took off my old thru hull depth transponder. I expected it to be caulked in with a hard drying glue like caulk like 4200 or 5200. What I found was a materiel formed into white rubber gasket. It was still flexible and water tight after 20 years. Cleanup with a putty knife was easy. I would like to replace most of the other thru hulls and would like to use this stuff if I could find out what it is. Any idea what it might be?

Also, what are the best thruhulls? I have had a bilge pump outlet break off in my hand as I was replacing the hose.

Bronze is best for thruhulls, but of course not for us. Marelon is pretty strong and I doubt that it would break off in your hand. For best strength and twice the bux you can get stainless, which I like. http://store.hamiltonmar...om/browse.cfm/2,607.html

Doug: Given the choices, I'd go with Marelon because it has no galvanic issues and is tough enough to be frequently recommended by the Boat US insurance people.

Yoop: As for sealants, 4200 is a flexible, "non-permanent" choice. I'm pretty sure it's ok to use underwater.
