I want to replace my 18-year-old Johnson 90 on the fishing boat with a nice E-tec but the darn thing won't die and I am too cheap to buy another engine while I have a working one. The low-emission 2-stroke technology is making its way into smaller motors, and it is hard to see any advantage in a four-stroke over one of these hi-tech 2-strokes.

Jeff,

I knocked the bottom off the transmission of my old Dodge pickup, you could look up and see the gears.

My buddy was building a trimaran in the back yard using WEST epoxy, so I used his stuff for a temporary repair. I washed the remaining casting with lacquer thinner, wet-sanded around the hole with epoxy, then wet out some glass with epoxy on a piece of wax paper, slapped it up from underneath and taped it in place with duct tape. Put oil in it next morning, and went right out to get a replacement transmission.

Ten years later I sold the truck, still with the temp repair, and threw in the replacement transmission for free.

So I have had good luck with the wetsand-with-epoxy technique. I take no credit for it -- it's right in Meade Gougeon's book.

Doug,

You are truly right on the advancements in the E tec out boards while on inquest of trying to
locate a kicker in the 20 to 25 hp range came upon a small out board motor repair & sales dealer
which turned me in the direction of the E tec motors he supplied me with a CD of the technology
(impressive) & some of the pros & cons of both the 4 stroke & the E tec & as of late May U can
place a order for the lower HP from 9 to 25 HP almost ordered one till he said they wouldn’t be
receivable till late Fall than the real shocker came the price OUCH !!! With auto tilt, power
prop, hydro joy stick steering & of course TAXES out the door well over $5000 smackers & that
was for a 9.9hp like he said wait a year or so till the bass- boys work some of the hiccups out of
the new innovated product which they all have & you’ll have one hell of a motor. By the way U
may want to hang on to that old Johnson he said they’re out of business & that Evenrude took
over their E tec technology & will no long be producing Johnson’s ?? So we may have a couple
antiques that may be worth at least what we paid for them some day. BTW if anyoneis interested
in some of the E tec motor U can get the CD at your local Evenrude dealer well worth a viewing
& about 20 min. of your time NOLiar

You'll have bad times, but they'll just wake you up to the good times you weren't paying attention to

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I'll be ready.
