My paranoia about security and personal information on the web has talked me out of this Facebook thing. I prefer to remain hidden in the shadows of the web as much as possible, at least for now.

Here...Here!

Web Sites like Face Book are sources for generating yet more SPAM and a focus for those running scams. As for me, I'll let you other folks play around there, it's good for business. I have been fixing computers for 27 years and thoses "group" sites keep me employed.

Since I started this thread, I might make one more comment. While not directed at any particular individual, I have seen a couple of posts that make me nervous.

Apparently, there is an assumption that if you do NOT go to facebook, or myspace, or other pages of this nature, you cannot be hit with viruses, or trojans, or other bad things. The truth is, you are LESS LIKELY to get infected on one of these pages, than doing a random search on google. Do the homework, and you will see what I mean. You hear about it more, because they have so many members (if it bleeds, it leads). Jeff didn't get infected on MySpace. Norm didn't get infected on FaceBook.

It takes a little more than that.

There is NO difference between FaceBook, MySpace, YouTube, Yahoo, iGoogle, and other legitimate advertising-based websites. Anytime you create an account with one of these outfits, you provide a certain amount of personal information, period.

With FaceBook, you can choose to provide a little, or a lot. Your choice. They do not pry into your computer and extract it themselves.

They do not "sell" your information, or give it away. If you provide the minimum required to sign up, use a non-essential email account (yahoo, gmail, hotmail), and use good judgment when surfing the web, you will be fine. That applies to surfing ANYWHERE on the web, not just these sites.

You will NOT be bombarded with useless emails (SPAM), since you choose whether or not to make this info public. The EULA tells you that they block other companies from foraging for email addresses. Do they? - I believe they try, but I also use a gmail account for signing in. I have a LOT of info provided on my page, including email, phone numbers, and the city I live in. I have not seen any increase in spam, and I would notice, since I have also been doing this for 25 years.

I also do it for money.

You WILL have to deal with the sidebar advertising - No different than your AOL page (Jeff) :), Yahoo page, iGoogle page, etc. And this info is customized, based on the information you have provided. If your occupation is listed as retired, you may end up with a lot of old people advertising. They have to make money somehow, and this is how they do it. They do NOT provide this private or public info to the advertisers, ever. You do not have to click on any of the advertising links.

FaceBook, MySpace, and other legitimate sites have been doing this for years - If it were a scam, they would have a massive backlash. The formula works on trust, not deception.

I did not set up the FaceBook page to compete with this forum, which I love immensely. I set it up because it is a central location that lets you put up photos and videos easily. It can also be used in other positive ways. I have found friends that I haven't seen in 30 years, and re-established those connections. I can't get that from Yahoo.

If anything, the exposure will probably direct more people to this forum (members), since this forum's website is listed right up front.

You can sign up, or not. Doesn't affect me one way or another. Just make your decisions based on facts, and not rumors. And, please, don't knock it unless you've tried it...

Surf safely,

John

I did not mean to contradict John, who is, as we know, a pro in these matters. I was too back in the days when GE, DEC, and Burroughs were the big names in the industry. I am still using unix-based stuff (just bought an eeepc for travel, runs linux) but I never warmed up to Windows.

I do, however, still follow the industry news, and there have been many concerns expressed about facebook's use of data, particularly beacon, an "information sharing" facility for advertisers that let Victoria's Secret know that you rented "Showgirls" from Blockbuster, for example. Beacon was withdrawn after much criticism, but many of its features live on.

Facebook had a bad worm a while back, and has been accused of faking "friend" emails to expand their user base. There are a number of incidents of hackers taking over user accounts. A good summary can be had by going to http://www.computerworld.com/ and searching for "facebook".

Meanwhile, I still keep an eye on Windows. Maybe it will catch on...

Show Girls was a great flick. I believe it will be a classic, one day;)
Windows, on the other hand, may never take off.

From the computerworld article:

December 5, 2008 (Computerworld) Facebook Inc. is resetting some user passwords and scrubbing the service of malicious links in an attempt to eradicate a fast-spreading worm that redirects infected machines to a little-known search site, the company and security researchers said today.

The "Koobface" worm, which has been circulating through the popular social networking service since at least Wednesday, continues to be a problem, said Craig Schmugar, a threat researcher at McAfee Inc.

"We're not seeing increases in propagation," he acknowledged today, but noted that cleanup was a tough chore for Facebook. "It's a bit of a cat-and-mouse game for them," he said. "There are certainly millions of links on Facebook. How do you know which are the bad ones, which are the good ones? That's not without problems."

Wednesday, Schmugar was one of the first security researchers to notice Koobface's spread and notify Facebook.

Earlier in the week, Facebook users began reporting receiving spam messages such as "You look just awesome in this new movie" or "You look so amazing funny on our new video" that tried to dupe them into clicking on a link. Schmugar said that if they did, they were taken to one of several compromised sites that then displayed a fake error message claiming that Adobe System Inc.'s Flash was out of date, and prompted them to download an update.

The "update" was nothing of the kind, but instead was an executable file that installed the Koobface worm, which in turn installed a background proxy server that redirected all Web traffic. According to Schmugar, the proxy servers listens on TCP port 9090, particularly for search requests to the major search engines, including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's Live Search.

"Search terms are directed to find-www.net," Schmugar said, "[which] enables ad hijacking and click fraud." The hackers are making money by redirecting users' searches to their own results, collecting cash from the ensuing clicks.

When Computerworld entered "thomas jefferson" as a search string at find-www.net, for example, the top result was a pitch for a free antivirus scanner. That scanner was, in fact, bogus and simply the first step in a so-called scareware scam that relies on sufficiently spooking users with phony warnings that they pay for fake security software.

Today, Facebook said it was dealing with the worm. "We're working quickly to update our security systems to minimize any further impact, including resetting passwords on infected accounts, removing the spam messages and coordinating with third parties to remove redirects to malicious content elsewhere on the Web," said spokesman Barry Schnitt in an e-mail.

He urged users to avoid links that "seem strange," and suggested that they arm themselves with up-to-date antivirus software. "The messages for this issue all have a title that is poorly spelled about seeing a video of someone, the text of the message has one to three words in all caps and then a spammy link," said Schnitt.

Koobface is a variant of one that hit MySpace, another well-known social networking service, last August, said McAfee's Schmugar. The earlier version targeted both MySpace and Facebook, he added, but the newest ignores the former and focuses on the latter. There are more than two dozen variants of the worm in circulation.

Facebook has posted a short message on its security page acknowledging the worm's attack. The notice urged users whose accounts had already been compromised to scan their PCs for malware and then reset their passwords.

Apparently FaceBook has been hacked once. There ain't no lock that can't be broken, and no failing business that wouldn't sell their every last asset before going belly up. Contact info is an asset. I would strongly advise members to create a "disposable" e-mail account and use it and not their ISP given account.

Sometimes your ISP (Internet Service Provider) lets you make "disposable" accounts. AT&T does, I believe. These are addresses that you wouldn't value.

More often, they do not, though most let you have up to 10 email accounts.

For example, I use "jsimanella@carrriername.com". This name would be important to me, because I can only use it once, and it contains personally identifiable information (first initial and last name). That would not be a disposable account.

I have also used names like "incognito_user@carriername.com" or "newguy007@carriername.com". I use these, when sites ask for email addresses, just to get a download or sign up for something. If I started to get a lot of spam (junk mail), I can just delete the account and create a new one.

Yahoo is a good place to get a free email account (yourname@yahoo.com). Gmail, by Google (yourname@gmail.com), is better, because they don't charge you for POP3 access (to use Outlook or Outlook Express to read your email). Gmail is also free.

Incidentally, both Yahoo and Gmail will present you with some "customized" advertising, while reading your email - No different than FaceBook. You seldom get anything, for "free", as your pops used to say...

Wow! I feel like I am a character in William Gibson's "Neuromancer" here, all this tech stuff.

To get back to basics, we were talking about Facebook as an adjunct to this forum, because of its social networking capability. I sort of think that the forum is network enough for me, but it is getting to be an audio/visual world and this venue does not support graphics and video very well, as well as providing no email notifications and stuff. The Crew (just turned 15) lives for facebook, an essential part of her brave new world. I think I am too old to learn it....

Oh man. Sorry I said anything about online paranoia.

Like John said, you can get virus, worm, trojan, malware, rootkit from any website if your click happy on every popup and don't keep your system updated.

Not against Facebook or any of those sites, but I choose to remain as transparent as possible on the web. I rarely put any valid info on any online forms unless I know its legit and is absolutely necessary. Other than that I will remain Joe Blo at 1234 None St. If anyone wants to contact me my email is none@none.com Liar

Me, too. No afraid of either the privacy stuff or the learning curve or viruses, but just haven't figured out how I -or anyone else- benefit from showing video of the wake and shoreline as seen from the cockpit. Oh, I can't do that because I don't own a videocam. For graphics, there are plenty of easy ways to share here and various sites such as Flickr/Shutterfly et al.
