This is a 1962 Graymarine 327 that I am going to attempt to rebuild and drop in my boat. Just like messing with engines. Sure I could do something else that makes more sense, but what fun would that be?

Go for it !!. I am doing the same sort now with my 63. I am rebuilding the two 63 Buick motors that came in it.

You'll just have to make sure your wiring (run/start/gauges) are setup correctly.

One thing to make sure of is what shape your exhaust manifolds are in. Vanness may have some since that was a pretty popular engine, if needed.
They could be hard to get.

Mine are OSCO and no longer made. So luckily they are in good shape.

That's an AMC/ Hudson V-8. Neat motor, but hard to get parts for.

Thanks - Its a 215, but not sure it started with the 4bbl on there. Goal is to have it ready for next season. Love those Buick 215 aluminum engines. Think I saw your youtube video on that one. Will post some pics once I get going on it.

Sure looks like an AMC.

Check my photos--and they are definitely an AMC. Could "215" be the horsepower?

Hey! The distributor is in the wrong lace for a 215 Buick; it should be in front, in the timing case. An AMC has it in the back (like a Chevy).

Mine is a 327, not Buick. I have seen the AMC engines with the flywheel forward, and aft. I think the 215 was the original HP rating according to the chart I found. I do not think the 4bbl intake and carb are original. Wondering whether to keep the Transmission with the gear reduction, or go with a standard 1:1.

Yeah confusing. Gray Marine named based on HP. My 215 CID Buick Motors are called 160's by Gray Marine becuase that is the HP.

Those photos brought back fond memories! I LOVED those 215s and used them in several of my cars back in the '70s. Rover in England bought the tooling and that motor stayed in production for over 30 years, ending up in 'cottage industry' sports cars (and elsewhere) that went like a bat outta hell! A great little motor.

PS: It must be said: The crappy oiling system Buick used (which is almost as bad as the latest GM small block) tended to take a week before the oil pressure comes up. (It draws oil from a foot away in the sump, then through a bunch of right angle turns before finally reaching the externally mounted oil pump.) I learned to be verrrry patient in the morning when firing her up--especially on cold mornings. The Mopar 440 used a similar system, but they made the oil path short and non-restrictive as possible.

Thanks for posting those Pic's Metalhead. Looks great - and lots of work. Can't wait to see the finished project. Being aluminum, you can probably pick those babies up over your head!
