Velvet Drive 71 series disassembly. These Velvet drives are fairly easy to take apart and reassemble. As always, don't be afraid to tackle this yourself.

I hate to advocate a rattle can job. But I did maintain boats as a profession in the past and rattlecan was the way to go. Unless you just felt to need to shell out tons of cash. As always, prepwork here is key. Parts had oils baked off or wiped with oil/grease remover, etching primer, and top coat. The good thing about rattle can is you can always reapply as you see fit.

FOR THOSE THAT CARE!!!! IF a boat sinks, PLEASE, IMMEDIATELY raise and flush her. Pickle her with anything oil related you can get your hands on. We have always believed in diesel, but man, ANYTHING would have saved this stbd engine. SADLY this stbd 318 appears to have been a lower hr replacement engine. Anyway, the saltwater didnt care if this engine was brand new or had 10k hours. Corrosion was to take its toll.

Glad to see you making progress, AND saving her. A big Ooh-RAH goes out to your Marine helping you on her. I know it sounds crazy, but I have actually saved an engine that looked like the crusty one you have there. It was a Buick V6 that sat for two years with water in the cylinders (not antifreeze, but plain water !) After a combination of brake fluid and PB Blaster, I finally broke it free & saved it. Cleaned all the parts using electrolysis and reversed all the rust damage (Check out this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4yYF8gSHdA ), a new set of rings & bearings and a month later I was driving the car.

Metalhead- dont even need to hone it! just scrub the cylinders with a brillow pad!
EWRice- Thanks so much! That ol' girl came to me in pretty rough shape. Engine was rusted solid, hydraulics not operational, electrical shot, etc. I soaked the cylinders with atf, mmo, and finally carb cleaner, finally got her broke loose and ran great. The first couple years she smoked a decent amount, but shes getting to the point where she quit. I use her to plow every now and then, and oddly enough, the harder you run the old girl the smoother she runs. Great machine, crazy that I can hop on this ancient machine and mow, plow, disc, and box blade the roads with her 12 hours a day.
Javalin- Thank you sir. He will be happy to hear it! A buick v6....wouldn't happen to be a grand national would it?
